Stretch Part/Assembly in IronCAD

Quickly Modify Parts and Assemblies

A machine frame needs to be longer, a cabinet narrower, or an existing structure needs to be adapted to a new customer specification.

With Stretch Part/Assembly in IronCAD, you can make such changes precisely, without having to adjust each part individually.

The feature works with a stretch plane and a specified distance. Parts that intersect the stretch plane and are suitable for the operation are stretched. Selected parts further along the stretch direction are moved by the same distance.

What does Stretch Part/Assembly do?

Stretch Part/Assembly, also referred to as IntelliStretch in the IronCAD documentation, is designed to selectively lengthen or shorten parts and assemblies.

You specify where the change should occur in the model. You then specify the direction and distance.

IronCAD distinguishes between:

  • parts that intersect the stretch plane and are adjusted;
  • parts that do not intersect the plane but lie in the stretch direction and are therefore moved.

This feature is particularly well-suited for applications such as machine frames, structural frames, and enclosures.

Real-World Example

Suppose a machine frame needs to be extended by 400 mm.

Place the Stretch Plane at the position where the structure needs to change and set a stretch distance of 400 mm.

The profiles that intersect the plane are extended. Selected components further along the stretch direction are moved by the same 400 mm. This allows the design to be adjusted precisely without having to modify each part individually.

This makes Stretch Part/Assembly particularly useful for designs that frequently appear in different dimensions.

How does Stretch Part/Assembly work?

The process consists of a few clear steps:

  1. Select the part or assembly you want to modify.
  2. Start the Stretch function.
  3. Place the Stretch Plane at the position where the change should occur.
  4. If necessary, use the TriBall to position the plane more precisely.
  5. Select the stretch direction and enter the desired distance.
  6. Confirm the operation.

The Stretch Plane can be placed based on a point, a plane, or a position on an edge. When you select an edge, the plane is placed perpendicular to that edge by default.

When is Stretch Part/Assembly useful?

Stretch Part/Assembly is particularly useful when an existing design is produced in different sizes.

Consider, for example:

  • machine frames;
  • structural frames;
  • cabinets and enclosures;
  • custom interiors;
  • transport structures.

Instead of adjusting each component individually, you can modify a clearly defined part of the design in a single direction.
