Baltic Yachts

Luxury sailboat from Baltic Yachts sailing on the open sea.

Finnish Baltic Yachts was founded in 1973 with a radical philosophy: to create boats that incorporate the very latest ideas in yacht design and new technology. In short, they design and build boats that are faster, stronger and lighter. They use high-tech materials and are constantly developing new construction techniques. By combining the latest carbon fiber technology with the highest construction quality from their skilled Finnish workforce, Baltic Yachts has designed and built several award-winning yachts to an unparalleled standard.

How has Baltic maintained this great track record over the years? Part of the answer is their move to IronCAD – a crucial decision made nearly two decades ago.

The move to IconCAD

Baltic’s design team had been using 2D CAD since 1988, but their yacht designs were simply too complex to visualize and test in 2D. They needed a new system for modeling complex parts and assemblies. In early 2000, they began their search for 3D software. Based on a reference from a colleague who had seen IronCAD at a trade show, they tested IronCAD and found that it outperformed all other competitors.

The impact of IronCAD

Since the implementation of IronCAD, Baltic has won new orders with their yacht designs that would not have been possible with their old 2D system. Baltic Yachts is not about building copies of yachts that already exist, but each yacht design is unique. The principles of faster, stronger and lighter define everything at Baltic, but they also emphasize flexibility and tailor everything to meet customer demand.

Committed to custom design, Baltic designers have found IronCAD’s innovative design functionalities essential for conceptual modeling. Innovative design offers true flexibility by allowing users to manipulate parts directly, independent of history and constraints, while preserving design information about features.

By combining IronCAD’s innovative design environment with the platform’s ability to accommodate a more conventional, history-based, structured design environment, Baltic can choose at the individual part level which process is most appropriate for a particular yacht design, giving Baltic engineers the ability to design the way they want.

IronCAD

  • Delivers a range of tools that allow Baltic to keep its customers closely involved by including photorealistic views, 3D/2D PDFs, web publishing of models and a stand-alone 3D viewer, all standard in the core product.
  • Provides the ability to rigorously test design data, allowing Baltic to reduce unnecessary prototyping and ultimately the cost of a project. In today’s economic climate, this is more important than ever before.
  • This allows Baltic users to build rigid, feature-dependent components with an embedded design intent, giving them more control over future changes.
